OWL Basics

OWL is an acronym for Online Web Learning, Dalhousie University's name for its virtual learning environment (VLE). Dalhousie currently uses Blackboard as its main VLE. Blackboard is a web-based collection of tools designed to complement in-class activities or provide a way to teach entirely online.

All Dalhousie instructors are encouraged to use OWL to communicate with students, provide course materials, assign course grades and provide numerous other services. It is best described as a container capable of holding a collection of tools to improve instructional engagement.

To use OWL, you need a username and password. Every student, faculty member, and staff member is provided with a NetID (username) and initial password. Your NetID is used to login to on-campus computer labs, My.Dal, OWL, and various other Dalhousie computing services. If you need to know more about your NetID, visit the UCIS web page titled Getting Started with your Dalhousie NetID.

Note: Although the login screen indicates you can get help if your forget your password, that does not apply if you have a genuine NetID. For those individuals who are not a student, faculty member, staff, or alumni, guest accounts can be arranged. For more information contact the ILO Team at ilo@dal.ca or (902) 494-3456.

For advice and instruction on how to set up and use OWL, contact the ILO team at 494-3456 or ilo@dal.ca.

To sign up for faculty and staff workshops in OWL and other educational technologies, go to our Workshop Schedule page.

You can also visit the ILO Workshops website for an online version of the workshops and advice on teaching with technology, including several workshops directly related to OWL.
